January 2005 Archives

January 29th 2005: Maria did a very nice thing, she had won a car in last year's end of year championships, she gave out the value for the Tsunami relief fund, read about it here.

January 27th 2005: You can read Maria's post match comments following her loss in Melbourne here.

January 27th 2005: Oh no, what a crushing loss for Maria today in Melbourne as she went down 2-6, 7-5, 8-6 against Serena Williams. Maria basically had everything going her way for a set and a half, she then got more opposition from her opponent and ended up losing the second set. Then, after a slow start by both players, Maria broke Serena's serve first and even had a chance to serve for the match, ended up having 3 match points, but she kind of lost control against a very determined opponent... In the end, Maria came close of breaking on a few occasions at 6-6 but saw Serena hold serve...and as so often happens in those occasions, the following game, Maria was broke:( What a crushing loss! We'll post her post-match comments later on today. In the meantime, congratulations to Maria for a great run in this tournament.

January 25th 2005: You can now read Maria's post match comments following her win! She talks mainly about how the heat affected her, read it here!

January 23rd 2005: Maria had a slow start but she rallied back, she lost the opening set but won 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 against Silvia Farina-Elia! Maria's biggest match as of yet will be played in her quarterfinal matchup as she'll face the US Open champion and world #5 Svetlana Kuznetsova.

January 19th 2005: Maria had a scare today in Melbourne but after dropping the opening set 6-4, she rallied back to post a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win! She thus advances to the third round where she will face Na Li from China:) Well done Masha!

January 17th 2005: Awesome start for Maria today in Melbourne as she started off her tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Sesi Karatantcheva!:) Next up will be Lindsay Lee-Waters on Wednesday, Maria's game matches very well against her....:)

January 15th 2005: Wow...this is promising! In her opening match, Maria will face 15 year-old Sesil Karatantcheva!! Not only is the talent in both of these girls amazing and promising but if you remember well, last year the two players met. And before that match, Sesil said: "I'm looking forward to playing Maria. We were supposed to play a practice match at Bollitieri but Maria backed off, she was afraid to play me". I'm sorry!? So anyway, they went on to play, Sesil won the opening set!!! But Maria recovered and won the two next ones. This should be an interesting match, go Maria, show her who's afraid:)

January 13th 2005: This is it!!! the start of the Australian Open is almost there:) Today, the draw was released, see it here:) Maria is the #4 seed this time around, her highest ever seed in a grand slam:) Maria will face a qualifier in her opening match!
